Arrows Running News and November Schedule

November News and Schedule

Wow, yet another amazing month. You are all superstars and all for the love of running!!

Highlights for October were:

  • The month started with circa 25 members travelling to Cologne. A great weekend was had by all (hopefully you have all seen the video that Anita posted) - if not - go have a look here on Instagram. We had representation in the marathon, half marathon and team marathon.

  • A special mention to Janice Nisbet – 2nd in W70 half marathon, Jo Davies – 17th out of 233 in the W50 half marathon, Lyndon Hearn – 20th out of 289 in M45 marathon as well as getting a PB, Mark Pattison’s – first marathon.

  • Not content with getting a PB in Cologne, Lyndon then travelled to South Africa and on the following 2 weekends completed the Coastal AA and Cape Town marathons.

  • Throughout the month we also had many members running marathons – Matthew Marriott (Berlin). Matthew runs all his marathons for Children with Cancer and so far he has raised over $10k. There was also Taras Huzar (Chicago), Peter Thornton (Yorkshire), Viddy and Louise (Chelmsford)

  • Sunday 8th October saw many Arrows taking part in the Herts 10k. Some great results. Congratulations to Ian Bryson who came 2nd in M40-49 and to Inga Cobb who also came 2nd in W30-39. After the event, many Arrows moved to the Inn on the Green to celebrate. Taras even managed to join via video link from Chicago.

  • The XC season started at Cheshunt on the 15th of October with a great turnout from Arrows. Well done to everyone who took part and for some great running times.

See below for details of future races.

  • David White and Chas Andrews ran the Autumn 100. This was David’s first-ever 100-mile event.

  • Jillian Russell, John Rowlands and Steve Billingham all took place in the London Parks half.

  • Jennifer Finlay and her daughter, Isla, took place in the Oxford half marathon. Isla was running in support of Meningitis Now and has already raised over £2,500.

  • Ammon Piepgrass has been doing a tremendous amount of guide running. He was running recently with Louise Simpson It was her 82nd marathon and 30th for the year taking her to 1520 miles. Well done Louise, what an achievement.

  • As always there has been great representation at parkrun. The tourism event took part at Wardown Park in Luton. Jillian Russell was the Run Director and we had 11 volunteers and 15 runners. Thanks, Julie for organising. We also had parkrun milestones achieved as well – Jillian Russell (200), Julie Horrocks (150) and Steve Green (50). A special note goes to Scott Clarke who was in attendance at the special German Should be noted that so far in 2023, 150 Arrows have completed 1606 runs at 261 different parkruns. The most popular parkruns are Luton Wardown (403 runs), Jersey Farm (202) and St Albans (194).

As we get to the end of the year, don’t forget to enter the Arrows Club League nominated distance races. We’ve got the 5m and 10k still to run. There is also the Hatfield 5 which takes place on Sunday 26th November. Entries are now open for registration. Remember to register as an Arrow and use your EA number and ATW discount code if applicable. No booking is needed for the 3 XC fixtures which also count in October and November. Read all about the league and follow the links to book – https://www.harpendenarrows.co.uk/web/indix.php/leagues/364-arrows-club-league-2023.

If you have achieved anything during the month, please do let a committee member know, or post on our FB page, and it will be included in our monthly publication.

We look forward to seeing more of you at the track, potential running specialist coaching sessions (TBA) and the Club 5k.

Please do make time for the Xmas lights run - a way off, but worth planning it in!

All the best, Sharon & Spiersy.

and finally...    we were aiming to run the Club 5k on the 31st of October, but due to roadworks and weather a Halloween-focused run was taken on by X people and we all adjourned to the Inn on the Green. It was well attended in the 3 groups that ran and also at the pub afterwards.

Arrows Club 5k Handicap, Winter Course + Cake Night

WINTER COURSE - ROAD RUNNING

Do come along, this is your monthly chance to get together with fellow Arrows, run a FREE timed 5km, and afterwards join us for a great social over a slice of cake! For the run, we do it on a handicap basis so slower runners go off first with the fastest last. Timed to perfection and everyone running at their expected pace - everyone could come over the line at exactly the same time!

Marshal volunteers - if you can help on the night please join our "Arrows Club 5km Organising" WhatsApp group by clicking this link Arrows Club 5km Organising WhatsApp Group.

Please also see our Facebook events page.

PLEASE NOTE SOME RULES ABOUT RUNNING AT THE 5K IN THE GENERAL NOTICES BELOW.

3. General Notices

Free t-shirt for RunLeaders

If you're good with a route or two and would like to lead runs for Arrows, please let us know! We are always looking for more people to join our core team, either as occasional helpers or as regular run-leaders. All you need is confidence and we'll give you more of that and some of the knowledge to keep everyone safe - it's not onerous and a lot of it is common sense.

If you're interested in leading please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and ask for more info.

Kit Shop: The club shop can be found here:

https://www.iprosports.co.uk/club-zone/harpenden-arrows/

The range of available kit includes club vests and t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, caps, beanies, and a new line of colourful hi-viz t-shirts bearing the club logo.

All kit can be personalised with names or messages on the front, back or both – so no more melting your t-shirt trying to iron on wonky letters (or was that just me)?

If you would like to see or try on any of the kit samples, please come along to our monthly 5km, Kit and Cake night, and speak to our kit secretary, Rowland Hughes. (email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

#JustTurnUp - St George's runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays

If you want to attend any of our regular run groups at St George's, please #JustTurnUp on the night. No pre-booking is required for our regular runs from St George's.

We will also always adapt any run groups to those that turn up on the night, or if possible form additional groups to suit varied paces. Nobody will be left behind and we operate a *looping policy if we happen to have a wide pace range in the group.

*That means that faster runners are asked to loop back to keep the group together.

Safety reminder for Arrows Club 5km events

Please note, for the safety of all members when participating in the Club 5km event, the following advice applies:

No headphones. For your own safety and to ensure you can hear instructions from marshals and cars on the road, headphones are not permitted whilst taking part in any club activity. If you are seen wearing headphones during the Club 5km event, you may be disqualified!

Wear high visibility clothing and/or your Arrows vest - this makes it easy to see you running on the dark roads.

Stay safe everyone, and stay well!

Thank you for supporting your club. If you have concerns or suggestions please get in touch.
