Arrows Running News and June Schedule

June News and Schedule

May certainly had a lot going beyond our first MWRRL, Wheato 10k and the parkrun tourism: I was told of adventures longer and further afield with Patrick McGuiness who did the Camino trail 1009k over 26 days. Ammon and Terry did the Ultra Trail Snowdonia 100k (22 hours, 6,500m climb), and Mark Hammond walked the St Columbus Way (st Andrews to Iona, 351k). Lyndon did the Two Oceans ultra (56km) and The Hobbit (90k over 2 days). Chas and Dave did the beer marathon in fancy dress as Roman Centurions. I'm sure that there is more... sorry to have missed them out.

June is also going to be a busy month..... We've got our hosting of the MWRRL race for Div III clubs on the 6th, 2 more races on the 15th and 29th, we're moving the speed sessions to KWS to the grass track - returning to Stockwood in September, the Club 5k and several local events including the Oval Run on the 24th June. May's parkrun at Houghton Hall was well attended and Julie has proposed the 17th of June at Bury Field. There is also potential talk of seeing if we can join the street-O event in Harpenden on 13th June.

Keep an eye on further notices on Facebook or get in touch.

Mid-Week Road Race League - a last call for help

The club has been in the Sunday League and MWRRL for over 12 years and managed to host a race just once before. We've got the chance to give something back and will be hosting on the 6th of June at the Rugby Club.

We've had a number of volunteers - but are still short of a few for marshalling the runners out of the rugby club and through West Common. Can you help? As you can imagine, there are lots of twists and turns in West Common and need people - so not solely relying on the signs that we're going to be putting up. Thanks to everyone already volunteering and there are some opportunities to help and run as help will be needed before and after the race.

Not keen to volunteer? No harm, please come and RUN! We'd love to see a full team and a sea of red Arrows in any photos.

Please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and it will get through to me. Steve who's doing a great job, will mark up the course and be your Marshall Director on the day. Alternatively, please join the WhatsApp group.

It's never too late, so if you can do on the night, please turn up from 7 pm for the Marshall briefing. If you want to help with car parking - it's 6 pm.

Race Instructions can be found at: MWRRL Div III Race 2 Harpenden Instructions FINAL.pdf

Look forward to seeing you!

What's going on:

  1. Track nights - Moving to KW School in June and July. We'll see whether we continue in August.

  2. Change to run times - Still at 7:30 and the last couple of Club 5k have been 30 mins earlier - but attendance has been a bit muted. Not sure if that's the event or the timing. Poll in June!

  3. Social -We've had quite a few impromptu drop in sessions at the Inn on the Green for post-run celebrations. Come join us for a drink at the MWRRL in the Rugby Club bar, watch out for an announcement on post St Albans half on 11th June. Make sure you also attend the Club 5k or the social after as Patrick McGuiness will be there to chat over his recent adventures - pretty amazing achievements!

Hoping for smiles doing your miles in the funshine.

Track Nights at KWS

Go to KWS, park-up (if you haven't run to warm up) and join us on the fields. Brucey won't be around to lead these sessions, but we've got lots of his ideas and coaching tips for the RunLeaders to adopt. Please come along for June / July.

Other Club nights

On remaining Tuesdays and Thursdays we will try to offer a selection of turn-up and run groups including 4, 5 & mile road groups as well as trail runs. If there is interest in having a 5k run or other requirements - please let us know and we'll see if there's interest to get a group together and could be covered.

RunLeaders

We'll try to offer hills or speed as an alternative to Track sessions on occasion, but runs are set up and led according to demand and RunLeader availability and will be pre-advertised on the Facebook group.

Arrows Club 5k Handicap, Summer Course. Pub Social with Patrick McGuiness

SUMMER COURSE - NICKEY LINE

Do come along, this is your monthly chance to get together with fellow Arrows, run a FREE timed 5km, and afterwards join us for a great pub social. We're searching out a nice location for all of us. We may be able to pre-order food, etc. For the run, we do it on a handicap basis so slower runners go off first with the fastest last. Timed to perfection and everyone running at their expected pace - everyone could come over the line at exactly the same time!

Marshal volunteers - if you can help on the night please join our "Arrows Club 5km Organising" WhatsApp group by clicking this link Arrows Club 5km Organising WhatsApp Group.

Please also see our Facebook events page.

PLEASE NOTE SOME RULES ABOUT RUNNING AT THE 5K IN THE GENERAL NOTICES BELOW.

4. General Notices

Free t-shirt for RunLeaders

If you're good with a route or two and would like to lead runs for Arrows, please let us know! We are always looking for more people to join our core team, either as occasional helpers or as regular run leaders. All you need is confidence and we'll give you more of that and some of the knowledge to keep everyone safe - it's not onerous and a lot of common sense.

If you're interested in leading please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and ask for more info.

Kit Shop: The club shop can be found here:

https://www.iprosports.co.uk/club-zone/harpenden-arrows/

The range of available kit includes club vests and t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, caps, beanies, and a new line of colourful hi-viz t-shirts bearing the club logo.

All kit can be personalised with names or messages on the front, back or both – so no more melting your t-shirt trying to iron on wonky letters (or was that just me)?

If you would like to see or try on any of the kit samples, please come along to our monthly 5km, Kit and Cake night, and speak to our kit secretary, Rowland Hughes. (email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

If you want to attend any of our regular run groups at St George's, please #JustTurnUp on the night. No pre-booking is required for our regular runs from St George's.

We will also always adapt any run groups to those that turn up on the night, or if possible form additional groups to suit varied paces. Nobody will be left behind and we operate a *looping policy if we happen to have a wide pace range in the group.

*That means that faster runners are asked to loop back to keep the group together.

Safety reminder for Arrows club 5km events

Please note, for the safety of all members when participating in the Club 5km event, the following advice applies:

No headphones.  For your own safety and to ensure you can hear instructions from marshals, and cars on the road, headphones are not permitted whilst taking part in the club 5km event.  If you are seen wearing headphones during the event, you may be disqualified!

Wear high visibility clothing and/or your Arrows vest - this makes it easy to see you running on the dark roads.

Stay safe everyone, and stay well!

Thank you for supporting your club. If you have concerns or suggestions please get in touch.
