5k Handicap 2022

Monthly 5k Handicap 2022

After a 2 year suspension caused by the pandemic the Arrows monthly 5k handicap is finally back!

The third Tuesday of the month (unless notified otherwise) we run a 5k handicap race. Its a lot of fun and because we start the slower runners off first the quick people have to work extra hard if they want to win. We meet at the club as normal but try to be a few minutes early so that we can work out your start time etc.

After the race we either have tea and cake or occasionally head down to the Engineer pub for a bite to eat and a well earned drink. (You can come for / with cake / pub if you didn't run too.)

You can shower at St Georges if you wish.

We run on the Winter circuit from Sep onwards. Please wear high viz clothing. If you can't run please come along and help with the marshalling.

Running qualifies you to points in the Arrows club League and volunteering (marshalling, timing etc) earns you points for the volunteers League. Club League details see Club League 2022 . Pre-pandemic results see 5k Handicap

And tonight's Club 5k Handicap results are in...

On this cool but dry night, there were 17 runners who all did some great running. A whopping 7 of them were first-timers. Three were in the first four:

1.Rob Ward (first time)
2.Audrey Zilliox Herrbach
3.Doug Walmsley (first time and also won by finish time)
4.Julian Tall (first time)

And who still dares to say the winter course might be slower after we clocked three PBs: Audrey Zilliox Herrbach (23:30), James Blackburn (27:06) & James Edgar (21:41)!

Well done to all runners and a huge thanks to the (14!) marshalls and caterers for another fantastic Club 5k and cake night. See you in a month's time for the next one.

Footnote 1: Sadly we did have a DNF tonight, due to a runner getting lost. But thankfully she was found and enjoyed company and cake afterwards.

Footnote 2: Richard Moreton managed to miss his allocated starting time slot and thus set off 3:13 late. I think this is the first time I've seen such a substantial self-imposed handicap.

Race report by Peter Thornton

Here are the results for tonight's 5k on the summer club 5k course on the Nickey Line. Fortunately it stayed dry despite the rain forecast.

Tonight's winner was Aly Northedge, with Claire Childs second and Philip Dean in third place. There were quite a few PBs tonight despite some pre-race comments about the heat, humidity and not running hard because of tomorrow's MWRRL race. Well done Claire Childs, Melissa Bridge, Mark Pattison, Nick Semple, Adam Mattison and James Blackburn for shaving off those seconds!
Simon might have appeared to have finished first, but he was helping me with the timing so started first too. His position has been adjusted to 17th place to reflect his handicapped time (sorry Simon 🙂 )
Thanks to all helpers, marshals and cake bakers/buyers for making this another great club event!

Race report by Peter Thornton

We had 22 runners and tonight's winner was Julie Horrocks who also managed to shave over 4 minutes off her time from last month. David Sandner was second and Janie Morris came third. There were seven PBs and quite a few first timers (since we restarted the Club 5k last month). Well done Adrian Cloake for running the fastest 5k time of 18:47 this month.

After the race we retired to St Georges and enjoyed some chat, a tea/coffee and a wonderful selection of delicious cakes provided by club members. It was great to see the new club kit that Rowland Hughes brought along too. I am interested in getting the new hi-vis Arrows running shirt that will soon be available.

Thanks to all volunteers: June Rowlands, Rhona McKee, Sharon Stanley, Lisa Munt, Steve Mowles, Claire Watts, Stephen McKee, David Russell, Jillian Russell, Isabel Green, Philip Trowmans, Aly Northedge, Simon Speirs and Christine Ferguson, all people who brought cakes and anyone else I may have missed.
